On the last day of August 2022, UP COE had the turnover ceremonies of its deanship. Attended by both incumbent and the incoming college officials, as well as other faculty and staff, 19th UP COE Dean Ferdinand Manegdeg passed on the torch, or in this case the flag of the college, to the 20th UP COE Dean Maria Antonia Tanchuling.

Her appointment was approved by the Board of Regents last August 25, 2022 and will serve the college until August 31, 2025. Her thrust revolves around the concept of “Engineering Sustainable National Development via Excellence and Engagement.”

Dean Tonette is the outgoing director of the Institute of Civil Engineering. Her research interests include Solid Waste Management, Plastic Leakage Studies, Microplastics, Environmental Impact Assessment, Water Quality Management, and Water and Sanitation. She is the Chairperson of the Philippine Association of Tertiary Level Educational Institutions in Environmental Protection and Management (PATLEPAM). She also sits as a Vice-chairperson of TAO-Pilipinas, an NGO which assists urban poor communities plan its settlements. She is a founding partner of AMH Philippines, an engineering consultancy firm. She is the Vice-Chair of the Environmental and Energy Engineering Specialty Group of Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) and also the Adviser of its Student Affairs Committee.

Dean Tonette will also serve as UP NEC’s Executive Director, with Dr. Rosalie Reyes as her Deputy Executive Director.
